Anklets, also known as ankle bracelets or ankle chains, are decorative items worn around the ankle. They have been worn by many cultures throughout history (for over 8000 years!) and have various meanings and cultural significance. Some see it as a sign of beauty that is often worn by women, in other cultures, it is seen as a sign of wealth and status. In some countries, an anklet is seen as a way to ward off evil spirits, so what does wearing an anklet mean? Well, it really depends on the culture you come from.

When styling an outfit, you might instantly reach for a necklace, bracelet or a pair of earrings. To take your look to the next level, why not incorporate anklets into your wardrobe.

Overview:

Do Anklets Have a Meaning?

When you first consider wearing an anklet, you might be thinking: 'Does wearing an anklet mean anything?'. Surprisingly enough, anklets are some of the oldest known pieces of jewellery, they've been around since at least 6000 BC. There is evidence that even women in Babylon may have worn ankle bracelets. In the beginning, anklets were created from wood, bone, and even precious metals. They were used as a fashion statement, as well as a symbol of social status.

Egyptians used the word 'Khalakheel' to describe anklets. Only Sumerian women and brides of the time could afford ones that featured gemstones and precious metals, slaves wore anklets made of leather or wood.

In Western culture, anklets have often been associated with women and femininity. They were popular in the 1920s and have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years.

In some cultures, anklets are also believed to have spiritual or supernatural powers. They are worn to ward off evil spirits, bring good luck, or as a form of protection. Overall, the meaning and cultural significance of anklets can vary widely depending on the context and culture in which they are worn.

Anklets, Their Meaning & Cultural Significance

Do Anklets Go on the Left or Right?

An anklet can be worn on any ankle. While there are some symbolic meanings and cultural significance in some cultures, in western culture, there are no underlying messages that are prevalent. You can decide which ankle feels the most comfortable for your jewellery. Some people like to coordinate their ankle jewellery with their bracelets: choose to wear them on the same side or alternate.

What Does an Anklet on the Left Ankle Mean?

Anklets worn on the left ankle can have different meanings depending on the culture or context in which they are worn. In some cultures, an anklet worn on the left ankle can indicate that the person wearing it is married or in a committed relationship.

In other cultures, an anklet worn on the left ankle can be a fashion statement or simply a decorative accessory. In some cases, the meaning of an anklet worn on the left ankle may be personal and specific to the individual wearing it, the options are truly endless. Over time, we have seen the meaning of anklets diminish in Western culture. Now they are usually just worn as a fashion accessories.

What Does it Mean to Wear Anklets on Both Ankles?

Anklets can be worn on one or both ankles. You can create a trendy look by wearing anklets on both ankles or go simplistic with one ankle. There is no real cultural significance to wearing anklets on both legs.

If you love to over-accessorise or like to feel even on both sides, then we say go for it! By wearing anklets on both legs you can mix and match colours and styles to create something completely unique to you. However, if you prefer to go for a more minimalistic look, then maybe it's best to stick to just one! The choice is completely yours.

Are Anklets Cultural Appropriation?

Anklets are not associated with a specific culture. Cultural appropriation refers to using something from a specific culture without permission. You do not need to worry about cultural appropriation when wearing anklets.
